Abstract:Today’s students read less than in previous years, which threatens to undermine reading competency. The AILIT project aims to increase literacy by creating a digital adaptive environment for reading education. Its goal is to motivate the student to work on their reading skills by including challenging and collaborative features. This thesis contributes to the development of the digital adaptive environment by exploring differences and similarities in student’s writing habits through text analysis. Of 201 students from Ireland and Norway, written texts were analysed in Rstudio. Text characteristics such as amount of words, genre, and sentiment and student characteristics such as age and country were taken into account. Significant effects were found for the relation between genre and total words, country and total words. An estimated means analysis showed significant differences in sentiment per genre. Main limitations of the study include an incomplete sentiment lexicon, lack of comparable data as well as a lack of knowledge about the circumstances of data collection.
