Abstract:Studying abroad can be challenging due to social adaptation and loneliness. This study examined two approaches to promote social connections among international students: personal storytelling and exposure to spacious virtual nature. The study hypothesized four main effects: (1) personal storytelling positively impacting social connectedness, (2) spacious nature having a similar positive effect, (3) a combined positive effect of personal storytelling and spacious nature on social connectedness, and (4) nature-relatedness mediating the relationship between spacious nature and social connectedness. 99 international students participated in the study, assigned to one of four conditions involving spacious/non-spacious videos and personal/neutral storytelling questions. Pre- and post-questionnaires measured social connectedness, while a nature-relatedness questionnaire was also administered. The results showed that personal storytelling significantly increased social connectedness compared to a neutral condition. However, no significant differences were found in social connectedness between spacious and non-spacious conditions or their interaction with storytelling. These findings suggest the potential of personal storytelling in enchasing social connectedness while highlighting the need for further research on the use of spacious nature and storytelling to enhance social connections among international students.
