Abstract:Climate change is an issue that affects many people worldwide. Since people from the global South are particularly vulnerable to climate change and face different social, ecological and political challenges, it is important to study their experience with climate change to gain a deeper understanding. Therefore, this study answered the question of how people from the global South experience climate change told in online climate stories. The Reflexive Thematic Analysis of 31 stories from the website climatestories.org of people from the global South resulted in seven themes and one sub-theme. The themes of “emotion-evoking”, “required action” and “perceptible changes” were the most common but also the most linked to other themes. Those themes showed that people from the global South described their experiences with climate change in an emotional, experiential and agentic way by expressing their emotions, their senses such as seeing or feeling climate change and their actions that could or should be done either collectively, individually or by external forces. As this study was conducted with stories from a pro-environmental forum, future research should investigate the experiences of people from the global South based on stories from forums with sceptic, neutral or mixed attitudes towards climate change.
