Abstract:Adolescent loneliness is a growing concern with significant implications for their well-being. Instead of relying on social interactions, engaging in mindful practices and spending time in nature may offer a promising solution. Additionally, nearness and vastness of nature may be beneficial to alleviating loneliness. Thus, this study uses a nature-based guided imagery intervention to deliver a mindful experience to adolescents to reduce loneliness. The study uses a 2x2 between-participants design and a control group. Conditions include nearby versus wild nature with and without social interaction and a control with no nature and no social interaction. 229 Adolescents (Mean age = 16.9, SD age = 1.44, 25.8% female) participated. ANOVA tests were conducted with loneliness as dependent variable, nature(-type) and social interaction as between-subjects factors, and time as a within-subject factor. This research highlights the severity of adolescents loneliness. Analysis showed a significant reduction in emotional loneliness for the control group and in conditions without social interaction, while emotional loneliness increased in social interactive conditions. Furthermore, imagination as a moderator increased social loneliness scores. The study highlight adolescents’ perspective on mindfulness techniques. Furthermore, it is crucial to continue exploring the underlying factors, tailoring interventions, exploring alternative delivery formats, and ensuring inclusivity.
