Abstract: | Fatigue is highly prevalent in post-COVID syndrome and has been found to negatively affect social functioning in many chronic illnesses. However not much is known about the long-term relationship between fatigue and social functioning in patients recovering from COVID-19. The aim of this observational longitudinal cohort study was to examine the long-term interactions between fatigue and social functioning over a course of 12 months. The study comprised a cohort of 735 individuals with a severe SARS-CoV-2 infection and subsequent hospitalization. Of these, fatigue levels (Short Fatigue Questionnaire) and social functioning levels (Short Form 36 Health Survey) were assessed at five measurement points in three-months intervals over a course of 12 months after hospitalization. Sociodemographic information was obtained once in the beginning of the study. Linear mixed model analyses were used to analyse the relationship between fatigue and social functioning and potential moderators across all measurement points. Multiple linear regressions were conducted to examine the predictive effect of fatigue on social functioning throughout the 12-month period and vice versa. The findings of this study add to the growing body of research investigating the long-term consequences for patients experiencing post-COVID syndrome up to 12 months after a severe infection. |
