Abstract:Implementing regional energy projects is crucial for national climate agreements. The municipality of Urk is undertaking two significant initiatives: establishing a new heat network and addressing net congestion issues. However, gaining support for these complex projects can be challenging, particularly for non-technical individuals. This research explores the use of a physicalization as a communication tool to explain these topics effectively. The study follows the Creative Technology design method. It identifies the key components of a heat network: the heat source, heat buffer, and households. Net congestion is defined as an electricity supply-demand imbalance. Stakeholders include municipalities and implementing companies. Through the specification phase, functional and non-functional requirements are established using the MoSCoW method. A functional prototype is developed, yielding positive outcomes. Evaluation through a questionnaire shows improved understanding of the proposed net congestion solution and a general grasp of the heat network concept. However, limitations are observed, such as incomplete comprehension of utilizing cold generated by households and difficulty defining "net congestion" even after interacting with the physicalization. In conclusion, this research highlights the value of utilizing a physicalization as a communication tool to explain the new heat network and net congestion concepts. It serves as a model for future projects that require clear explanations.
