Abstract:This Bachelor´s Thesis is probing the main drivers that drive professional football clubs in Germany towards designing and intensifying sustainability strategies and climate action policies. Five hypotheses emerged from an extensive literature review of the current state of the art in the field of environmental sustainability in sports, featuring the variables social responsibility, competitive advantages, reputation, regulation, and saving of expenses. After examining the DFL Sustainability Guideline, which sets the current major regulatory framework for ecological sustainability endeavors in the Bundesliga, the hypothetical main drivers were empirically tested on the cases of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim and FC St. Pauli, two professional German football clubs. Two expert interviews were conducted with representatives of both clubs. After studying the conducted data, it was found that social responsibility, reputation, and regulation are the main driving forces that motivate professional football clubs in Germany towards shaping and reinforcing environmental sustainability strategies. The analysis of the two remaining variables led to congruent findings: Whether the climate action strategies of professional football clubs in Germany are driven by competitive advantages and saving of expenses is highly dependent on the economic resources and sponsoring partners a club has at its disposal.
