Abstract: | Dysphagia affects approximately 0.6% of the Dutch population, particularly individuals with head and neck cancer (HNC), leading to physical and psychological challenges. Improving swallowing quality is crucial for HNC patients. While videofluoroscopy swallow study (VFSS) is commonly used, it primarily focuses on anatomical issues and poses challenges for objective evaluation. High-resolution impedance manometry (HRIM) offers the potential for assessing physiological problems by measuring pressure and bolus motion with a catheter. However, HRIM is not widely implemented in HNC clinical care due to a lack of measurement standards and analysis complexity. This study developed a tailored protocol for combined VFSS and HRIM measurements, and VFSS is investigated as a supportive tool for HRIM analysis. An automated algorithm for sensor counting in VFSS images enhances efficiency. A comparison of different methods for anatomical landmark definition showed great potential in using VFSS images and reveals limitations of relying solely on HRIM data. Incorporating anatomy from VFSS images into pressure topography plots can provide deeper insights into the location of anatomical structures in pressure topography plots. This has the potential to enhance the comprehensiveness of HRIM data for less-experienced users, as well as improve the accuracy of landmark definition. |
