Abstract:The mental healthcare sector in the Netherlands is confronted with long patient waiting lists. One mental healthcare organisation which focuses on children and adolescents has developed a project within their organisation to tackle the problem of the waiting list and to decrease the work pressure healthcare professionals experience. This project aims to increase the efficiency of healthcare professionals’schedules and to unburden the healthcare professionals of their scheduling tasks. This, however, implies a significant change in their current way of scheduling and discarding their current plan-related habits. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to identify what their attitude towards this change is, how this affects their willingness to change, and how this relation is influenced by the strength of their plan-related habits. This research uses a mixed methods approach. 11 interviews were conducted to identify the plan-related habits, change-related attitudes, and willingness to change. A questionnaire filled in by 97 healthcare professionals aimed to measure the strength of these variables and their subsequent interaction. From the analysis was found that healthcare professionals hold quite strong plan-related habits, but habits do not affect healthcare professionals’ willingness to change. The attitudes readiness for, affective commitment to, and openness to change have a positive effect on willingness to change, and, in general, habits do not moderate the relationship between change-related attitudes and willingness to change. Keywords: organisational change, attitude towards change, habits, willingness to change, habits, mental healthcare professionals, mental healthcare
