Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of a gamified cycling intervention on health behaviours, focusing on intrinsic motivation. It was hypothesized that the intervention would influence participants’ attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, and intention, with intrinsic motivation as a mediator. Method: A between-subjects experiment was conducted with a control group using Google Maps for a traditional cycling route, and an experimental group engaging in an intrinsic motivation-focused gamified AR cycling route. Participants’ attitude, subjective norm, perceived control, and intention were measured post-cycling and the additional qualitative feedback was analysed. Results: No significant effects were found between the experimental and control groups regarding intrinsic motivation, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control, and intention towards recreational cycling. Technical issues and adverse weather conditions contributed to the lack of anticipated outcomes of the experiment. Conclusion: The study did not support the hypotheses, indicating that the gamified cycling intervention did not produce the intended effects. Due to the limited sample size, it was difficult to conclude if the gamified cycling intervention was ineffective or if there was not enough power to find an effect. Further research and development of effective approaches to promote health behaviours, such as (recreational) cycling, remain essential.
