Abstract:The study aimed to investigate the fluctuation and association between basic need satisfaction (BNS) and emotion-focused coping (EFC) in the daily lives of students using the experience sampling method (ESM). The research focused on both active and avoidant EFC strategies and examined lagged associations. Data were collected from 84 students who reported their BNS and EFC three times a day for a week. Results revealed significant within-person variability in both BNS and EFC over time. Higher state BNS was associated with less use of EFC, with autonomy and competence showing negative relationships with state EFC. While state BNS was negatively associated with both active and avoidant EFC, the assumption that BNS would be positively related to active EFC and negatively related to avoidant EFC was not supported. These findings support the dynamic nature of BNS and EFC, highlighting the importance of examining these constructs at a within-person level. Satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness enables individuals to perceive stressors as challenges and directly address problems, reducing reliance on emotion-focused coping. Future research should use comprehensive study designs, capture BNS and coping more comprehensively, and consider mediating variables to gain a deeper understanding of the need-coping relationship.
