Abstract:This Master’s thesis considers the development of a framework for Unilever, a consumer-packaged goods company, focusing on sustainable packaging design. The objective is to identify areas of interest for enhancing sustainability in packaging design, enabling Unilever to initiate targeted projects to address these areas of improvement. This assignment is motivated by the growing demand for sustainable packaging, which has prompted companies to takes steps and introduce innovations in this field. This research delves into the diverse challenges associated with the transition towards more sustainable packaging alternatives. However, sustainability is a sophisticated and a complex concept, and there is no single universal method or measurement to address it. As a foundational approach in this research, the triple-bottom line approach to sustainability is adopted. To assist the packaging developers in this transition, a framework is developed. The developed framework translates existing sustainability approaches for packaging into various strategies and is utilised in the initial stages of the design process. This framework consists of multiple layers that provide design directions, as well as identify limitations and challenges associated with the identified approaches. As the culmination of this project, the framework is verified and validated through a case study. The case study involves the development of a theoretical draft redesign for an existing packaging within a specific Unilever portfolio, following the prescribed framework. The objective of this development is identifying both short-term and long-term solutions that enhance sustainability and align with Unilever’s sustainability commitments.
