Abstract:This study aimed to explore the dynamics of leader-follower interactions in teams and their impact on team effectiveness, addressing a gap left by previous cross-sectional research that overlooked the dynamic nature of such interactions during team meetings. The study employed video observations to capture nuanced behaviors of leaders and followers during meetings within a Dutch public company, complemented by team and follower effectiveness surveys. 65 teams with 791 followers and 65 leaders participated, and the teams were divided into two groups based on effectiveness. The findings demonstrated that highly effective teams exhibited both leaders and followers engaging in more task-oriented behaviors in contrast to less effective teams. Notably, followers within effective teams displayed considerably more task-oriented behaviors compared to their less effective counterparts. Additionally, the analysis unveiled distinct interaction patterns in effective teams, characterized by reciprocal exchanges between leaders and followers, while less effective teams displayed more isolated interactions. The study emphasizes the importance of using process mining tools to uncover hidden patterns in leader-follower dynamics. Combining video observations with qualitative data collection methods can provide a comprehensive understanding of interactions.
