Abstract:Disinformation is a massive issue for modern liberal democracies. Under the European Democracy Action Plan [EDAP], the EU has launched the Digital Service Act [DSA] to legitimize further action. This thesis looks at its organizational structure to assess how stringent it, in combination with the code of practice on disinformation [CPD], is able to pursue this without exacerbating existing issues or creating new ones alltogether. There's a lot that might prove ineffective, but it's organized incredibly future-proof. The CPD has an impressing reach under its larger targets, but the reporting tool has proven somewhat ineffective based on the first wave of reports of January 2023. It's openness in conceptualizations might also be its shortcoming, as it goes directly against the proposed narrow definition of its predecessor. Nonetheless, large volumes of information will be created through it, allowing researchers and the EU alike to be more specific in their future endeavors. Furthermore, it's efficacy remains to be seen; especially in its internal and external monitoring and enforcement capabilities.
