Abstract:AI has many benefits, however, it also evokes worries about e.g. algorithmic discrimination, privacy and responsibility. To inform citizens about AI and include them in decision- and policy making, science communication and public engagement efforts are deployed. However, these structurally exclude and underrepresent minoritized groups of citizens, although they are at highest risk of experiencing negative consequences of AI. Consequently, this study investigates the inclusivity and diversity of science communication and public engagement regarding AI in the Netherlands, through the experiences of citizens in low SES neighbourhoods in Enschede and their wishes for future initiatives. 19 semi-structured interviews were conducted. AI was perceived to be an important topic, that sometimes highly affected participants’ worldviews. However, only a minority of the participants regularly engaged with information and activities about AI; an engagement paradox. Participants experienced barriers to participate – both material (e.g. financial, logistic) and social/emotional (feelings of alienation and shame, concentration issues, lack of mental space, age). Consequently, participants gave recommendations for more accessible and inclusive initiatives. Overall, the citizens were more knowledgeable and interested than they themselves anticipated; however, more needs to be done to create equal opportunities for citizens to engage in science communication and public engagement about AI.
