Abstract:Governments, international organizations, and researchers are incorporating agroecology into sustainable food systems transition policies to address climate change impacts on agriculture and meet Sustainable Development Goals. However, to avoid exacerbating existing inequalities and to address current concerns that agroecological practices are sometimes labor-intensive, institutionalizing agroecology requires careful implementation. Few empirical insights exist on the effectiveness of institutionalizing agroecology, and research is needed to assess its performance in achieving just and fair transition goals. The objective of the thesis is to assess how the institutionalization of agroecological practices impacts its ability to realize a just and fair transition in the agri-food sector, with a focus on India and Senegal. First, the research creates an evaluation matrix using environmental justice and agroecology theory; and then uses these criteria to evalua te agroecology institutionalization in India and Senegal. The research concludes that institutionalization is necessary due to its scale, resources, and legislative power. However, agroecology transition should not start with institutionalization, as it should come after farmers have developed the willingness and knowledge to adopt ecological practices. Institutionalization should not overshadow farmers and grant them autonomy to practice agroecology without external interference.
