Abstract:Distal radius fractures are a common fractures, with an incidence of approximately 200-400 per 100,000 persons. In recent years, extensive research has focused on the surgical treatment of DRFs due to an increase in their prevalence and the emergence of new minimally invasive techniques. However, non-surgical methods of fracture immobilization with casts, braces or splints remain important in fracture care. Over time, the composition and application of plaster casts have changed little. However, man aspects of DRF management remain a subject of debate. Therefore, this thesis aims to to investigate and propose advancements in the management of DRFs in three chapters. The first presents a systematic review that examines the optimal immobilization duration for non-or minimally displaced DRFs. The second chapter introduces a study protocol for a pilot study investigating the use of patient-specific 3D printed splints as an alternative to traditional plaster of fiberglass casts. These 3D printed splints have the potential to enhance patient comfort during treatment. Despite various studies on patient-specific 3D splint design and usage, the implementation in clinical practice remains limited due to technical, logistical and regulatory challenges. Therefore, the third chapter presents a roadmap for implementation, based on our experience. The primary focus of this roadmap is to address aforementioned challenges and facilitate the practical implementation of patient-specific 3D printed splints in fracture care.
