Abstract: | This research is conducted at Kvadrat High Performance Textiles, which produces high quality indoor blinds. The transfer press (TP-3) located in phase 3 in production does not meet the efficiency target of 70%. This research investigates how the current scheduling strategy can be improved to increase the efficiency of the TP-3. The machine is frequently started for small production runs, leading to high waste and low efficiency. The TP-3 uses raw material rolls in the production process which requires setup time. We approach the problem by considering 2 separate problems: a bin packing problem (BPP) and single-machine scheduling problem. We solve the BPP by using the best-fit heuristic and improving the solution by reducing the leftover material on raw material rolls using an order splitting heuristic. We solve the scheduling problem by using the shortest setup time (SST) heuristic. It can be concluded that the SST heuristic outperforms the current scheduling method (CURR) by 17% on average in terms of efficiency over 12 instances. |
