Abstract:NS strives to achieve the highest level of safety which is reasonably possible. For this they must comply with the European and Dutch regulatory bodies each with their own safety requirements. Furthermore, in some instances NS themselves adds further requirements related to safety if they feel that this is needed. All of those requirements are in place to create control measures that aim to increase the overall safety. However currently there is no structured central overview which control measures relate to which specific hazards. This knowledge does exist but it is fragmented throughout the organization in different departments and tools. In this research a tool is developed that can store and display the relations between safety hazards and control measures in one central location. This tool is a database that can be used by NS to look for specific relations or have a broad indication on the overall safety for a specific hazard. To fill this tool with usable information a method was defined that uses safety related requirements to define relations between control measures and safety hazards. This method was used to evaluate these relations that are connected to the doorsystem. Having a good insight in these relations can significantly help NS to improve safety. One way which is explored further is to use this tool to predict the occurrence of unwanted situations based on the control measures that are in place. This could change the decision making process of NS for risk acceptance from a qualitative one to a more quantitative process. Which hopefully can contribute to the overall safety for the passengers.
