Abstract: | The main purpose of this thesis is to find out how each of the key claims of degrowth as a social and environmental movement land in the spectrum of Dutch political parties. This is done first through a theoretical look at the Dutch political landscape and an analysis of Degrowth literature, followed by the analysis of the election programmes of the three Dutch political parties of the PvdD, PvdA, and Groenlinks. Results show that while part of the Degrowth movement's ideas are present in Dutch politics, especially in the PvdD, they are far from wholly embraced. Most importantly, its holistic vision in seeing the challenges surrounding climate and socio-economic problems as intrinsically connected, is not (yet) to be found within the Dutch political spectrum. It is this unique perspective that sets Degrowth apart, and may also make it a very fitting solution to today's multitude of wicked problems such as the apparent tension between economic welfare and climate policy. |
