Abstract: | This thesis explores the potential of actively controlling the two taglines, horizontal cables between the blade and the crane, to minimize offshore blade motion during installation. This could allow the use of floating vessels instead of jack-up vessels for offshore blade installations. Floating vessels have several advantages over jack-up vessels but lack the stability required for blade installations. Two 2D Simulink models are developed and used to study the influence of controlled taglines on the motion of a large blade, subject to different loads. The results show significant lateral and axial blade motion, mainly due to vessel motion. While controlling the taglines is shown to be an effective method of reducing lateral blade motion, additional taglines are needed to address the axial motion. |
