Abstract:As environmental consciousness grows among companies, many are undertaking Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) for Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) reporting. These reveal insights into their product's environmental impacts that offer a prime opportunity for sustainable product development. However, limited sustainability knowledge within firms creates obstacles to fully capitalising on this potential. This thesis aims to explore the integration of LCA and EPD data and expertise into sustainable product development. The study begins by introducing a design tool for Aalberts Integrated Piping Systems. The focus points of the tool draw from the LCAs of Aalberts’ portfolio. It informs decision-making by outlining considerations and simplified LCAs where options can be compared. Additionally, a framework assists sustainability managers in other companies in tailoring similar design tools to their contexts. By adopting the design tool and framework, LCA data and expertise seamlessly integrate into product development, aligning with the existing product development structure for easy adoption. The framework's systematic approach ensures no vital aspects are overlooked. Its adaptability to businesses with varied sustainability knowledge ensures a broad range of potential users. As companies adopt these practices, the collective impact on reducing environmental harm promises a significant shift toward societal sustainability.
