Abstract: | This paper explores the feasibility of harnessing a 13th-century mechanical escapement to address the challenges of the 21st century. The primary objective is to evaluate the potential of utilizing this escapement to regulate the deployment velocity of solar arrays in space, within constraints of limited mass and cost-effectiveness, while emphasizing system simplicity. The approach involves a parameter analysis conducted through numerical and analytical modeling, complemented by prototype-based performance testing to validate our models. The results of the research indicate that the verge escapement mechanism is well-suited for this application, and its performance can be reliably predicted through analytical modeling techniques. |
