Abstract: | Climate change will induce prolonged droughts and higher frequencies of short and intense rainfall events. Particularly in urban areas, it will pose multiple challenges due to high percentages of impervious surfaces. To mitigate subsequent negative effects, adaptation measures to ensure a robust spatial rainwater distribution are needed. These should distribute rainwater so that it will (1) prevent sewerage overflows, (2) prevent inaccessibility of roads, and (3) prevent houses from pluvial flooding, while also (4) retaining as much rainwater as possible. This study assesses adaptation measures’ effectiveness regarding those 4 metrics. The effectiveness is assessed for 3 rainfall events with varying rainfall depths predicted for 2050, using a state-of-the-art fully-distributed hydrodynamic model named 3Di. Four assessed measures have been assessed: (1) reducing impervious surfaces and (2) storing rainwater on private properties, and (3) lowering verges and (4) creating wadis in public spaces. They showed varying effectiveness for assessed metrics and rainfall depths, where measures implemented in the public space showed largest effectiveness and potential. Moreover, this study shows the significant influence of geographical features on a measures’ effectiveness, emphasising the need for detailed spatial modelling. The outcomes could contribute to efficient climate adaptation plans, ensuring liveable urban areas in the future. |
