Abstract:The aim in surgical reconstruction of zygomatic fractures is to restore function and symmetry as adequately as possible, by reducing the zygomatic bone (cheek bone) to its original position (before the trauma). During surgery, the intraoral access may limit overview and exposure of the fractured parts. Currently, flat fixation plates are often bend manually and used for fixation of the fractured parts. Osteosynthesis materials with predefined, three-dimensional shapes (preformed plates) are used in orbital reconstruction and orthopaedics; the rationale behind it is that the predefined shape aids in accurate reconstruction or repositioning after trauma. A preformed reconstruction plate for the zygoma has recently been introduced by one of the manufacturers, but the current design could be improved in several areas, such as compulsiveness of ft and layout of screw positions. The goal of this assignment is to provide the foundation for design of a preformed zygomatic reconstruction plate. In the first step, the requirements and desires of the design are listed. Preliminary designs are proposed based on the requirements and desires. The second step is to evaluate the average, normal anatomy and variability between patients in the anatomy of the zygomatic bone. It is necessary to create an average data to ensure that the osteosynthesis preformed plate is accurately matched to the individual patients and in the general population. The feasibility of the preliminary designs is evaluated based on the information contained in the normative anatomical model.
