Abstract:This study aims to determine whether theoretical training on crisis negotiaton that includes clear examples explaining the theories being learned and how these theories applied can look like during a crisis negotiaton, via the platform PowerPoint, is better suited to prepare novice crisis negotiators for a crisis negotiaton with a person who shows concerning behaviours than a theoretical training on crisis negotiaton without these examples. The term concerning behaviour can be defined as:“Concerning behaviour can be expressed as suicide attempts, disorientation, paranoid or delusional episodes, hallucinations, memory loss, or aggressive behaviour such as threats or physical violence. Also, these people can be under the infuence of stimulants such as alcohol or drugs, which can alter their behaviour or increase the prevalence of mental illnesses such as delusions” (Bulsink & Potgieter, 2018; Koekkoek, 2019). The main focus is on whether the theoretical training with examples helped the novice crisis negotiator to be less stressed, distracted and perceive less danger and be better prepared and have a better performance during a simulated crisis negotiaton. The simulated crisis negotiation takes place directly after the theoretical training. The simulated crisis negotiaton is carried out in a virtual reality environment where the participants have the task of convincing a person who shows the concerning behaviour of suicidal tendencies to step down from the edge of a roof of a building.
