Abstract:It is common for students in the Netherlands to consume alcohol excessively despite its (in)direct negative consequences. Self-monitoring-based interventions give mixed results, arising questions regarding effectiveness. RQ: what does it mean for students to self-monitor their drinking behaviour and underlying motivators using a mobile application? Sub-questions: (1) how suitable is an ES app for finding drinking motives? and; (2) how do students experience the use of an ES app for self-monitoring? A sample (n = 58, age 19-27 [M = 20.2, SD = 3.4]) was recruited to fill out a one-time pre-survey in Qualtrics, two daily surveys for seven consecutive days, and a one-time post-survey both in the ES app Avicenna. It was found that an ES app seems to be suitable for finding drinking motives amongst students. Students expected to gain awareness into their drinking behaviour, which they partially got. Adjustments to the app’s content and logistics could improve their experiences with such an app. The ES app identified various drinking motives, including those of the DMQR. Students experience the need tailoring the ES app, which could influence the effectiveness of ES-based interventions. Further research is necessary to study this influence.
