Abstract: | This thesis report addresses the critical issue of limited access to eyeglasses, particularly affecting individuals in the global South. The lack of affordable and accessible eyewear solutions prompted the exploration of emerging technology, specifically Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing. This technology enables cost-effective, personalised, and particularly localised production of eyeglasses frames. The research delves into overall requirements and safety standards for eyeglasses frames while exploring existing hinge designs. Complemented by material research, an iterative design process that uses rapid prototyping led to the development of multiple 90° bistable compliant hinges. The selection and integration of the final hinge into a frame led to a one-part eyeglasses frame, rendering it fully 3D printable. Nylon 12 (PA 12) was the right material for this application. Configuring the printing parameters was essential to achieve optimal results, given that the selected material posed challenges during the printing process. Intensive testing demonstrated the durability of the frame prototype and ensured compliance with standards and requirements, marking a significant step toward resolving the eyeglasses accessibility challenge in the global South. |
