Abstract:This paper investigated the relationship between the organizational factors centralization, market competencies, strategic flexibility and technological novelty and strategic thinking. This research was inspired by a meta-analysis of Shaik and Dhir (2020), in which the relationship between strategic thinking and organizational factors was investigated. They discovered relationships between strategic thinking and organizational factors, yet they could not make statements about the underlying reason for them. First, the existing literature on strategic thinking in the organizational context was reviewed and it appeared that strategic thinking can be seen as a creative thought process that entails distinct defining concepts, like intelligent opportunism or thinking in time. These concepts served as the basis for the codebook that was utilized to analyze interviews with a conceptual content analysis. The results showed that, depending on the organizational factor that was discussed and depending on the participant, different strategic thinking concepts were more salient than others. After all, it appeared that all participants engage in strategic thinking when dealing with the selected organizational factors, and that there is now right or wrong with regards to strategic thinking. Yet, some factors appear tend to elicit more generalizable responses, whereas others tend to elicit more individual responses.
