Abstract: | This thesis explores the potential impact of literal and abstract sound design approaches on cognitive load within VR environments, specifically focusing on enhancing user experiences in museum settings. Stemming from the creation of a user-friendly museum exhibition room, where usability plays a significant role, the project aims to design and implement sound effects to improve usability and manage cognitive load. An expert interview informed the decision to research literal and abstract sound effects' influence on usability and cognitive load. Employing a within-subject experimental design, literal and abstract sound effects were tested, revealing a very slight trend favoring literal design. Challenges such as non-normal data distributions and slightly unsuitable testing methods are acknowledged, emphasizing the need for further refinement in methodology and analysis. Despite inconclusive findings, the study emphasizes the importance of continued investigation into sound design's role in VR environments. |
