Abstract: | There has been limited research into the manufacturing or manipulation process of a polyurethane resin-based polymer for biomedical applications. Polyurethane resin (NOA63) is a polymer with a shape memory effect, also known as an SMP. There has not been research into the influence of the ambient temperature on the transition temperature of the SMP. Also, this research looked at the possibility of magnetic actuating the SMP by adding Pr-Fe-Co-Nb-B powder into the solution. Therefore, this research aims to prove the concept of a multi-responsive structure that is magnetically actuated and exhibits different elastic modulus at different temperatures. The multi-responsive structure was made in segments, each segment with its characteristics. The polymer was cured at varying ambient temperatures. This influenced the transition temperature of the polymer. As a result, a multi-segment structure had two different elastic modulus at the same temperature. Additionally, varying Pr-Fe-Co-Nb-B powder ratios with the polymer solution showed no response to magnetic stimuli. Therefore, for the magnetised shape memory polymer a permanent magnet (1.2-1.4 T) was used instead. The permanent magnet caused the multi-segment to be magnetically actuated. The multi-segmented structure displayed varying mechanical and magnetic properties when under a varying magnetic field and temperature. |
