A feasibility study on poly-lactic acid and polyhydroxy-alkanoates application within the packaging portfolio of FrieslandCampina
Emous, J.J.J. van (2024)
Plastic packaging is often derived from fossil-based resources, contributing negatively to climate change. Because of this, FrieslandCampina aims to transition towards a fully circular and net climate neutral packaging portfolio by 2050.. Therefore, FrieslandCampina wants to investigate whether there are other renewable, biodegradable, recyclable polymers that could aid in achieving the set targets. First, the most viable biopolymers are compared: PLA and PHAs, by using a decision matrix. Subsequently, after determining PLA application had the most potential, the risks of PLA application in the supply chain of a 500 g yoghurt cup were concluded through performing a PFMEA. Through testing, these risks were researched and the feasibility of PLA application could be concluded based on the results of the tests and the findings in literature.
