Abstract: | This Master's thesis examines the design of standardised, reusable packaging systems for Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCGs). In the context of setting up a national reuse ecosystem, there is a need for standardised packaging. This research investigates the conflict of standardisation and differentiation in the design of reusable packaging. Addressing a gap in existing research, the study integrates technical, marketing, and environmental perspectives. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research encompasses a literature review, case study, consumer survey, and expert interviews. This methodology facilitates a deep dive into the technical prerequisites for scalable, reusable packaging and the dynamics of maintaining brand differentiation in a standardised system. Key findings reveal a list of requirements for the design of reusable packaging and short- and long-term solutions for the presentation of reusable packaging in store to educate and persuade consumers and for brands to stand out more. Reusable packaging can be designed to balance standardisation with differentiation by strategically focusing on visual and verbal branding elements. The study concludes in a set of recommendations for future research, advocating for the optimisation of durability, ongoing testing for real-world application, exploration of innovative materials, and further investigation into consumer acceptance and usability. |
