Abstract: | This thesis evaluates the redesign of powertrain housing side covers, shifting from aluminum to thermoplastic composites. It explores the feasibility and effects on electric powertrains, highlighting benefits like cost reduction, improved NVH, thermal efficiency, and function integration, against risks such as property demands, cost increases, and design uncertainties. A design study with two suppliers led to selecting Polyamide 66 with 50 weight percent of short glass fibers for its structural benefits. Simulations showed marginal thermoeciency gains but inconclusive NVH results. Cost analysis varied depending on load-bearing requirements, and electromagnetic compatibility emerged as a complex, potentially expensive challenge. Validation tests met specications, setting a path for mass production while acknowledging remaining risks. |
