Abstract:This study aimed to examine whether the error handing strategies error management and error prevention influenced the levels of worry, stress, self-efficacy, on-task and negative self-related off-task thoughts and the performance of negotiators in suicide negotiations. Participants watched a video to learn about suicide negotiations and the Behavioural Influence Stairway Model and were randomly assigned to two groups(error prevention or error management). They then applied this knowledge in a Virtual Reality crisis negotiation simulation with a suicidal person in crisis. There were 41 participants who participated in the study. The results unexpectedly showed that those in the error management group experienced higher levels of worry and stress prior to the negotiation than those in the error prevention group. Further, contradictory to what was expected, there were no differences found between the groups for all other dependent variables. These findings provide a basis on which future research can build upon since error handling strategies may have a different effect in crisis negotiations than previous research has shown in other areas. For practice the results may suggest that training for negotiations should also take error handling strategies into account since they possibly have a direct impact on stress and worry of negotiators.
