Abstract:Introduction. People in Europe are still excluded from Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), called Digital Divide (DD) exacerbated during the Covid-19 pandemic. For an overview of this field, the research question of this paper is: How do vulnerable groups in Europe (people with sociodemographic vulnerabilities and people with mental health disorders) experience the DD during the time of Covid-19, as reported in scientific literature? Methods. A mixed-methods scoping review was conducted by searching the Wiley Online Library, Scopus, PsychINFO, and Web of Science databases. 346 studies were screened and eleven met the eligibility criteria for the analysis. Results. Articles revealed data from elderlies (N = 40.821), youths (N = 31), people with mental health disorders (N = 858), and with low socioeconomic status (N = 16). The Covid-19 context revealed two themes: the digitalisation of health services and everyday life. The barriers to ICTs were analysed with thematic analysis and revealed insights into the underlying levels of DD access, usage, and outcome. Conclusion. During Covid-19, vulnerable groups are faced with similarities, but also specific barriers to the DD. Future research should focus on other suffering groups and positive experiences to inform future interventions and to be prepared for new pandemics.
