Abstract: | Bisexual individuals often face discrimination and are overlooked due to their polysexuality, even within LGBTQ+ communities. This scoping review examines the literature on bisexuals' feelings of connectedness to the LGBTQ+ community, investigating their experiences and factors contributing to a decreased sense of connection. Fourteen studies, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method research, were analyzed. While some positive aspects of connectedness were noted, the thematic analysis identified several barriers. Internalized biphobic stereotypes within LGBTQ+ communities were found to hinder bisexuals from connecting with them. Gender-specific and overarching bi-negative stereotypes also emerged as obstacles. The intersectionality of multiple marginalized identities further negatively impacted bisexual individuals' experiences within LGBTQ+ communities. This review highlights the challenges bisexual persons face in building a strong connection to the LGBTQ+ community and identifies potential factors contributing to these difficulties. It also emphasizes the novelty and limited research designs in this field. Further investigation is recommended, particularly focusing on gender differences, intersectionality, and utilizing additional research methods like longitudinal studies. |
