Assessing the Impact of a New Container Depot in Hengelo on CO₂ Emissions and Fuel Consumption

Rasea, I.W.Y. (2025)

This thesis explores the potential environmental benefits of establishing a new container depot in Hengelo for Cleaning Twente (CT) and Inland Terminals Group (ITG). The aim is to assess how this development could reduce CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption by minimizing long-distance transport currently carried out between Hengelo, Rotterdam, and Antwerp. Using the CRISP-DM methodology and emission factor-based calculations (WTW approach), the study analyzes operational data from 2018 and 2019 across container handling, truck transport, and barge transport. Results show that truck transport has the highest emissions, while barge and handling operations are comparatively more efficient. The proposed depot scenario demonstrates a 43% reduction in CO₂ emissions saving over 1.28 million kilometers in truck travel and approximately 382,000 liters of diesel annually. These findings support the case for a local depot as a practical step toward more sustainable logistics operations.
