Abstract:Smoking is the most important cause of early death in the Netherlands. Only a small number of smokers is able to quit smoking successfully. Smoking reduction seemed to be effective in helping people quit. Within this research it was investigated whether an intervention about smoking reduction would be advantageous within the telephone counseling for quitters by STIVORO. Therefore, 185 counseling conversations were qualitatively examined on advantages and disadvantages of smoking reduction, reasons to reduce smoking and experiences with reduced smoking. Furthermore, it was analyzed how often the topic smoking reduction was mentioned within the counseling and whether there were differences in cognitions and demographic variables between smokers who reduced smoking and those who did not. Except with gender, there were no significant differences between reducers and non-reducers. The number of men was greater in the group of reducers than in the group non-reducers. The most important advantage of reduced smoking mentioned was that it would be easier than quitting at once. Another group smokers and especially the coaches found that quitting became more difficult after reduced smoking and very difficult to keep up smoking only a few cigarettes for a long time. Smokers told that they reduced smoking in order to make quitting easier. An intervention about smoking reduction would be advantageous
