Abstract:The Dutch legislation obliges local governments to communicate with citizens concerning external risk factors in their surroundings. In the process to determine the information needs of the public about these risk factors, risk perception takes an important place. The term risk exists from objective and subjectively measurable properties. In this study, that makes use of a new model, an attempted is made to establish a relation between the subjective variable risk perception and an objective variable risk pressure. The variable risk pressure has never been used before. Also it is examined if both variables play a role at stipulating the information needs of citizens. With an existing data set, using a linear regression analysis, the model has been reviewed. The conclusion is that risk pressure has a share in the explained variance of risk perception although not very large (0.3%). The information need of citizens in this research is explained for a small part by risk perception (3.7%) and for a smaller part by the risk pressure (0.2%). This finding however is not significant.
