Abstract:This study was undertaken to understand the needs of the AWWs, the current status of ICDS anganwadis in a tribal region of Dharni and the individual and contextual factors which influence AWWs ability to enact child centered ECE practices in their classrooms. Guided by a theoretical framework which focused on examining individual factors at the nano level, the instructional and the local community context at the micro level and the institutional as well as organizational setting at the meso level, this study aims to understand the enabling and hindering factors for AWWs capacity building. The study investigated OAs (with ongoing CLR interventions) and CAs, (new AWCs where CLR plans to expand its program). Findings reveal that ECE enactment is weak in most of the OAs and CAs. The local community as well as the institutional context is not conducive for teachers to implement systematic ECE on a regular basis.
