Abstract:Objective: Procrastination by academic students is not only associated with poorer academic performances, but also with poorer mental health. Stress is predicted to mediate this relation, because procrastination leads to an increased level of stress and stress has a negative impact on mental health. Mindfulness is a skill that may help the student to cope with procrastination. The practice of mindfulness-meditation is considered to have a positive effect on procrastinators, because of its positive contribution to self-regulation, something that procrastinators fail to do. However, research on this relationship has not been done yet. Therefore, this study first examines the relation between mindfulness and procrastination and second, the predicted mediation model where stress mediates the relation between procrastination and mental health. Method: 99 Psychology students (87 female, 12 male, mean age 23,6) at the University of Twente participated in this study. They all completed a set of four self report questionnaires: Lay’s Procrastination Scale (GPS), the short version of the Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-sf), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the short version of the Mental Health Continuum (MHC-sf). Results: This study obtained a significant negative correlation between procrastination and mindfulness. Students with meditation experience were found to score significantly lower on procrastination than the students without any kind of meditation experience. A mediation analysis showed a significant result for complete mediation of the relationship between procrastination and psychological wellbeing by stress. Conclusions: This study showed a significant relationship between procrastination and mindfulness and found evidence for the existence of a mediation model where stress completely mediates the relationship between procrastination and psychological wellbeing.
