Abstract:In the last decennia there is a decline visible in the consumption of pure liters of alcohol per head in the Netherlands. This decrease in alcohol consumption is not visible in the alcohol consumption by young people between 16 and 24 years old. The excessive consumption of alcohol costs the society a lot of money and it causes health problems. Tactus verslavingszorg tries to encourage the responsible use of alcohol by setting up a program named SmartConnection. This program uses peer educators to show young people that you can have fun without drinking alcohol. To make SmartConnection a big success the project needs a lot of peer educators. At this moment recruiting peer educators is difficult. If you have insight in the motives of peer educators you can use that for a more effective recruitment. In this study 10 peer educators participated in a depth interview. The main reasons to become peer educator were SmartConnection-related motives. Also the career motives and the learning motives played a huge role in becoming peer educator. The financial reward and the fun motives also played a part in the decision to become peer educator. After recruiting peer educators it is important to keep the peer educators for SmartConnection. The main reasons for peer educators to stay involved were social motives. Especially friendship among the peer educators is essential in keeping peer educators. Also a reward and opportunities to participate in the development of SmartConnection played a role in maintaining peer educators.
