Abstract:For the past several years reality shows are very popular and common on Dutch television. What makes reality TV so popular and why do we like to watch these shows? Several studies have shown that a number of motives play a major role for watching reality TV. However, these studies focused on reality TV in general and there was no distinction made between different genres. This study focused on which motives play a role in various genres of reality TV and on whether these motives for viewing different genres are different between gender and age or not. This is examined by a five-point Likert Scale survey, for five different genres. The participants had to answer different propositions to what degree they applied to them. These propositions offered different viewing motives. The results showed that the motives entertainment and voyeurism plays an important role. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that the differences between gender and age groups are not the same for each genre. This indicates that it is important to distinguish between different genres of reality TV and that it cannot be seen as one genre.
