Abstract:The amount of the elderly in the Netherlands is rising. The percentage of 65-citizen has risen last 20 years from 12,8 % to 15,6 %. This allows for problematic developments within the society in the financial field, within the healthcare and the labour market (CBS, 2011). Within the framework of ageing, few research has been done at the personal experience of ageing (Montepare & Zebrowitz, 1998). Previous research has shown that several factors are related to the personal experience ageing: subjective age (Barak & Stern, 1986; Baum & Boxley, 1983; Goldsmith & Heiens, 1992; Kastenbaum, Derbin, Sabatini & Artt, 1972; Markides & Boldt, 1983; Ward, 1977), physical loss, loss of social contacts and continued growth (Steverink, Westerhof, Bode Ditmann-kohli, 1999-2001; & Westerhof et al., 2003). It also appeared that the personal experience of ageing is related to people’s well-being. The correlations between the sub-scales of the personal ageing experience and the aspects of well-being appeared to be low (-0.11 to 0.53) (Steverink et al, 2001). Some participants with a positive well-being, got a negative personal experience of ageing. The purpose of the current research is to figure out what is related to a negative personal experience of ageing, when one has a positive well-being. The research question within this research is: 'What is related in having a negative personal experience of ageing at people with a positive well-being?' 9 Participants within the age groups 40-54, 55-69 and 70-85 years participated at an in-depth interview. Within this group of participants with a positive well-being, there were 4 participants with a low and 5 participants with a high score on the personal experience of ageing. After the analysis on the results of the interviews, 4 main conclusions can be drawn: 1) The factors 'general’, 'physical ', ' mentally', ' mindset', ‘appearance' and 'finiteness' are related in having a negative personal experience of ageing. 2) People with a negative perception of aging (BOWneg) are mored focused on the lower life goals, while the group ‘BOWpos’ is more focused on higher life goals. 3) The group ‘BOWpos’ got a greater acceptance concerning their own ageing than the group ‘BOWneg’. 4) The group ‘BOWneg’ is more pursued with their own ageing than the group ‘BOWpos’.
