Abstract:Motive and goal of this study: In the Netherlands Boer zoekt vrouw is the most popluar TV program and viewing rates are still increasing. Much research has been done concerning reality-tv and programs such as Boer zoekt vrouw, but mainly assessing the people’s motives to watch reality TV. Up to now individual differences in the audience and their impact on people’s motives to watch reality TV are not taken into account. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of the viewer’s demographic factors on their motives to watch Boer zoekt vrouw. Results: The results of the analysis demonstrad that all motives except voyeurism are affected by at least two demographic factors. Further the motives of the viewer are not influenced by the valuation of Boer zoekt vrouw. Viewing habits and the format are either positively or negatively affected by the different motives of the audience. . Conclusion: The results of each hypothesis indicate only partial significant evidence in support. Demogrophic factors effect two out of eight motives significantly. The place where people have grown up appears to have no effect on any motive. It can be concluded that the more people can identify themself with someone in the program Boer zoekt vrouw the more often they tend to watch it. The increasing scores of leasure time acitivity and voyeurism tends to correlate with decreasing amount of time spent on the series Boer zoekt vrouw. Furthermore there is a negative relationship between downward comparison and appreciation of the format of Boer zoekt vrouw. People who have information, identification or entertainment as motive appreciate the format more.
