Abstract:This study aimed to focus on comparing findings from the narrative therapy/psychology with findings from the future oriented psychotherapy/psychology. The present study tried to answer the following research question: ‘’In what way can findings from the narrative therapy/psychology and the future oriented psychotherapy/psychology be integrated in one new form of therapy, called the narrative future oriented therapy, with the aim of promoting mental health?’’ To answer this research question a qualitative research was conducted, which was inspired by the Grounded Theory for literature survey. The first step in conducting this literature survey was to select literature on the basis of which both forms of therapy could be compared. For analyzing the narrative therapy, two books were selected which are written by the founders of the narrative therapy, Michael White and David Epston. The books they published have had a great influence on the current narrative psychology and were therefore selected for the literature survey. In case of the future oriented psychotherapy, little research has been done on this form of psychotherapy. In so far as is known is Melges (1972; 1982) the only scientist that has laid an explicit focus on integrating an temporal perspective in psychotherapy. On the basis of these publications, the findings from the narrative therapy and the future oriented psychotherapy were systematically analyzed. With this analyses an research protocol has been used. A summary of this research protocol is included in the second part of this research report. On the basis of these data a summary has been made with the most important findings from the narrative therapy and the future oriented psychotherapy. Within this analyses the focus has been laid on analyzing the theoretical foundations, therapeutic goals, mechanisms of action and important concepts of both forms of therapy. When taking into consideration the most important findings that resulted from this analyses, an attempt was made to create an integrated form of therapy, called the narrative future oriented psychotherapy. On the basis of the most important findings, the following rationale can be composed: The future oriented psychotherapy tries to acquire, by means of a narrative focus, a future perspective in which the patient is enabled to come closer to the person he wants to become by setting realistic goals and discovering and practicing goal directed behavior. On the basis of this rationale, a proposal was conducted for an integrated form of therapie. This proposal contains a first design for a combined form of narrative therapie and future oriented psychotherapy.
