Abstract:This report describes the analysis of the feasibility of a crematorium in the region of Hardenberg. In the current situation, inhabitants of this region have to drive for more than half an hour for a cremation to one of the surrounding crematoria. The research is initiated by Birgit Rusken who lives in Hardenberg and wants to know whether this trip to a surrounding crematorium is necessary or whether it is possible to realize an own crematorium in Hardenberg. The research focuses on economic feasibility of the crematorium in Hardenberg and especially on estimating the demand in this region for a crematorium. Four research issues will be analyzed to determine the feasibility of a crematorium in the region of Hardenberg. Firstly, the yearly number of cremations in this region will be approximated, based on historical data of the region of Hardenberg. Next, the micro environment will be analyzed by executing a SWOT-analysis to picture the possibilities and issues of the idea of the crematorium. This is followed by a stakeholder analysis on meso level through which the role of the stakeholders in the crematory branch is examined. On the basis of this analysis, the direct stakeholders can be identified and there will be described how the crematory should treat its direct stakeholders. Finally, the macro environment is examined on the basis of a PESTEL analysis. This analysis determines expected developments on the long-term in the society that might affect the funeral branch and therefore influence the feasibility of the crematorium. The data needed to determine the feasibility of the crematorium on the basis of the four research issues is gathered in three ways. First of all, general information is gathered through desk research. Secondly, four people from the funeral branch are interviewed to generate specific data to complement the information from the desk research. Finally 32 inhabitants of the region of Hardenberg are contacted by telephone. The goal of these conversations is to get an idea whether the opinion about cremation of inhabitants of the region of Hardenberg conform the expectations based on literature and indirect data. These respondents are selected based on the generations that can be formulated based on historical events, to see whether there’s a shift in the opinion about cremations over time. Based on the information gathered in this research it can be concluded that a crematorium in the region of Hardenberg is not feasible yet. The current expected annual number of cremations is approximated to be 242, while in consultation with a national funeral organization the minimum annual number of cremations is set at 350. This quantity is based on the costs of realizing the crematorium and the continuity of the company. However, based on the conversations by telephone with inhabitants of the region of Hardenberg it is expected that in the future more people in this region will chose to cremate through. Therefore, the crematory might be feasible in the future.
