Abstract:This research is part of a study that has been conducted for the Ruud van Nistelrooy Academy. This is a non-profit organization which helps children age 9-12 to develop their talents. The Ruud van Nistelrooy Academy asked to review their method if it is effective or not. In this paper a pre-test has been done and a literature study has been conducted to look for intra- and interpersonal competences, and to look for the several developmental stages and possible problems that can occur. Two subquestions have been made. The first question is: ‘what are the several developmental stages where children go through and what are the possible problems in these stages? The second question states: ‘to what extent do the children of the Ruud van Nistelrooy Academy have intra- and interpersonal competences at the start of the school year? The survey for measuring the intra- and interpersonal competences of the 81 children has been completed by the children as well as the coaches of the Ruud van Nistelrooy Academy. All coaches received a letter with instructions for completing the surveys in the right way and information about the survey itself. The coaches also completed a profile with several demographic variables of the children. The findings of subquestion one are as follows: The children of the Ruud van Nistelrooy Academy are in a developmental stage where self-confidence is a key aspect. The development of skill, competences, and traits plays an important role. Besides of this lots of developmental problems occur. Behavioral problems, emotional problems, and multiple developmentsproblemacy are examples of this. The results of subquestion two are that children score themselves the highest on the scale ‘competences regarding the self’. The coaches give the highest score to the children on the scale ‘social competences’. A second result is that children score significantly higher on nine out of ten subscales of the SeoL survey than the coaches do. Third result is that there are also significant differences between scores of coach and child in the six different locations of the Ruud van Nistelrooy Academy. Another result is that there are significant differences between locations for the scores of the coaches on the following three scales: emotional competences, social competences and competences regarding the self. Last result is that there is a significant difference on the scale ‘social competences’ when the scores between children from under ten years of age are compared with children above ten years of age.
