Abstract:This systematic review will focus on the effects that yoga can have on the degree of depression. Depression is a common problem with serious consequences. It is therefore important to pay attention to this problem and continue to search for possible (preventive) treatments, besides the existing (preventive) treatments. People with a depression often have physical symptoms and dysfunctional thoughts. Yoga is in line with this, through exercises that develop and stimulate awareness of body and mind. The central question in this systematic review, is to what extent can yoga reduce the degree of depression. Studies were selected if they were primary studies, when there was a yoga intervention, when there was a psychological outcome measure, when the applied measurement instruments supported the psychological outcome measure, when the study was a randomized controlled trial and when a full text is present. Eventually 28 studies were included. Results can only be interpreted with great caution. They suggest that yoga can reduce the degree of a depression. Yoga can be applied preventively and possibly in addition to standard therapy. There are no results published in which yoga worsened the degree of a depression. To determine with more reliability whether yoga reduces the degree of depression there is more and specific research required, in which yoga and depression will primarily be studied and in which the results will be statistically analyzed.
